Compared to female white counterparts, the African American males lost significant but lesser weight after the gastric bypass surgery or bariatric surgery. Significant factor that might contribute to such results includes the person having a high initial weight and older age.

In the study that was conducted, the average body mass index was 47.6 and the average age was 45 years old. In addition to that, statistics alone tells us that African American adults are considered to be the major bulk of persons who are classified under obese compared to other race.

The obese persons are equally the same in gender, for there are one third both male and female who are part of the obese group. Hence, the race is a major factor on weight loss compared to the gender.

Dr. Ramsey M. Dallal, a chief doctor of the bariatric or minimally invasive surgery at Einstein Healthcare network, says that health status improvement are considered to be consistent in all the groups according to research, yet, the weight loss of each person varies from one to another. Hence, further studies should be conducted to be able to determine why some persons appear to be resistant to losing weight than others.

Safety is obviously a huge concern for any parent or carer – especially if the person in question has special needs. This is usually because the balance and coordination is not always as good as someone without.
